Most normal folks kind of assume that any lawyer can practice any sort of law and do a decent job. The truth is that most private practice lawyers will only specialize in a couple areas of law, and therefore will only take those specific cases. If you were to look to the internet, you will find that most Las Vegas lawyers specialize in the most common forms of law, such as divorces, custody, criminal defense and personal injury. While this seems like a lot, there are so many other areas of law that you may find yourself needing at one point or another.
Here at Justice Law Center, we are Las Vegas lawyers that specialize in many areas of the law, however, just like other Las Vegas law firms, there are many areas of the law that we do not have any experience in. In these situations, we are always happy to refer these potential clients to expert attorneys that do.
Personal Injury Law
The personal injury school of law involves the litigation surrounding compensation for a bodily injury that has occurred due to someone else’s negligence. Unfortunately, if you are injured due to your own negligence, it is very unlikely you will receive any compensation, unless your own insurance plan covers such things.
In order to have a valid personal injury case, the injury that you have sustained must have been directly related to the negligence of another party. This means that if you were walking into a store or business, and you slipped and fell due to a wet floor, and one of the employees of the business failed to put out a wet floor sign, you will likely have a valid personal injury case.
The majority of injury cases that occur will be litigated between your injury lawyer and the insurance agency of the liable party or entity. Car accidents are one of the most common injury cases, where your lawyer will send a demand letter to the insurance agency of the person responsible for the crash.
Family Law
The practice of family law incorporates many different types of cases that are all heard in family court. In Nevada, “family court” is a division of your particular jurisdictions District Court. The most common type of family law cases is divorce. There are several different types of divorce in Nevada as well. The major different types of divorce are contested and uncontested divorces. Then, the divorce will either be filed “with children,” or “without children,” and this specification must be clearly written in the heading of the divorce paperwork.
Other family law cases involve the custody of unmarried couples. These cases are filed to get the court to issue an order on how child custody will be established, and what kind of custody is to be established, how much child support will be paid, if any, as well as what kind of visitation with the non-custodial parent will have.
Another common form of family law that many Las Vegas lawyers specialize in is guardianship. A guardianship is similar to a custody case but can involve both children and adults who cannot take care of themselves such as elderly people and people with disabilities.
Criminal Defense
The criminal defense area of law is one of the most dramatized aspects of the practice of law. TV shows like “Law and Order” have painted criminal defense attorneys as little better than the criminals themselves. Enter the fast-talking lawyer in an expensive suit that fights to get the seedy criminal off Scott free of their charges.
The reality of criminal defense law is lawyers who attempt to only mitigate the punishment for charges that most often, the client is guilty of. It is a very rare occurrence that a criminal defense lawyer will get a client that is actually innocent of the charges that are brought against them.
Immigration Law
Immigration law is the practice of getting residents of other countries legal permission to live in the United States. This includes applying for visas and fighting deportation. Often, immigration law clients are individuals who are already living in the U.S. illegally and are trying to obtain a legal status.
